The Steelhead appliance is Riverbed's flagship product and designed as an easy-to-use and deploy appliance that can accelerate the performance of enterprise applications to near LAN speed.

Steelhead appliances address the core problem with WAN acceleration--LATENCY! Latency is the amount of time it takes for a round trip from the client to the data center. Increasing line capacity will not eliminate the problem of line latency.

By utilizing Scalable Data Referencing in Riverbed's propriety software, Riverbed Operating System (RiOS), we are able to address the latency issue providing near-LAN speed access for the remote user.

Steelhead appliances are suitable for any firm with two or more locations wanting to increase their WANs performance without deploying servers, storage and other infrastructure into their remote offices.

When Steelhead appliances are deployed in-path, between the router and switch, no changes are required to your infrastructure. Steelhead appliances will auto-discover and begin optimization of the line traffic immediately.
